Personal Statement

I remember being a little girl thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up and I knew that I wanted to help people. My grandmother always told me, “nothing is impossible if you put your whole heart and mind into it.” Therefore, I took her advice and followed my dream of helping people and became a registered nurse. I began my nursing career at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC where I worked as a staff nurse on an intermediate critical care floor. The unit was high-paced and I had to be quick on my feet to be able to respond rapidly. I applied my critical thinking skills and utilized effective communication during every situation that I encountered. I collaborated with other healthcare professionals to develop and modify treatment plans to provide the patient with the best course of action. These qualities will be critical to build upon while in school becoming a nurse practitioner. I currently work at an outpatient dialysis center in Mount Airy, NC. I have been with the company, Health Systems Management, for almost two years. I not only employ leadership at work but also out in the community. As a volunteer for First Baptist Church and a member of Mount Airy Junior Women’s Club, I am very passionate about helping the community and promoting change. After three years of being a registered nurse; I yearn for a more prominent position in nursing. I recently obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in August 2017. Three weeks into my BSN program, I found out I was eight weeks pregnant. I was excited but nervous that I would not be successful in the program. However, with each semester I set new academic goals for myself and I accomplished them each semester. By the last semester, I had a came up with a solid system that prepared me to be successful in the program while taking care of my newborn.

I love being a registered nurse because it is hands on and I am able to provide quality, effective patient/family centered care. I am applying to this program because I want to further my education while advancing my nursing skills, so I can provide a higher level of care to my patients.
